Before and after showing how yellowing can accumulate over time. This block needed to be rebuilt but care was taken to ensure the original material remained (blue material was matched and replaced).
Family quilts are meant to comfort and remind us of loved ones. So when time takes its toll, restoration to keep original patterned materials and replace solid colored ones add years to family heirlooms.

Hand-tied heirloom quilt showing a likely variation of the eight-pointed LeMoyne Star pattern. This quilt was pieced from feed sack material (circa 1930-1950). The "batting" was a repurposed blanket, dating the finished quilt to approximately 1950-1960.
One area of damage required replacement of the material (lighting intensified so material could be identified). Replacement allowed for structural support and rebuilding of the seams.
By reinforcing damaged areas, the original materials are made whole and kept within an heirloom piece. While repair and restoration work can be slow, the efforts are worth it in the end.
